Today, Sophia and Delilah will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in their classes. Last year, I made Delilah a tee shirt to wear to her class celebration and this year, I made Sophia this Bandanna Calavera dress to wear to her class party. I’m also bringing Pan de Muertos and Aqua de Jamaica.

For this design, I used a bandanna as my calavera base. This technique made it so easy to create this quick design. Let’s dive in to how I made it.

I started with a plain dress that we had on hand and a white $1 bandanna. I think you could use an color of bandanna for this technique.

I printed a calavera (skull) clipart from the computer to use a a template. I also used fusible webbing to attach the calavera to the dress.

Iron a piece of fusible webbing to the back of the bandanna.

I used the corners of the bandanna because it had the most design elements. You can get 4 skulls cut from 1 bandanna.

Use a pencil to trace the calavera shape to the paper backing on the fusible webbing.

Cut the skull Calavera shape and peel the paper backing.

Position onto the dress.

Iron to attach.

I sewed around the edge to secure for future washings. You can hand sew, machine sew or use dimensional paint as I show below.

I used lightweight plastic gems for the sparkle look on the Dia de los Muertos dress.

Use washable gem glue to attach gems to the calavera.

Outline the edge of the skull shape with dimensional fabric paint. I think black looks best for this design but you can use any color.

Paint around all the edges.

Sophia loves her new Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) dress. This technique was so easy to do with the bandanna.

I snagged the Dia de los Muertos socks at the dollar store. They perfectly complete her look!

Thanks for stopping by for this Bandanna Dia de los Muertos dress tutorial. This technique works on tees, hoodies, tote bags… etc.
