Watch the How To!
Create your own sidewalk chalk with just a few ingredients. Layer up the colors to create popsicle designs or just one color to create a chunky chalk.
MATERIALS
2 Disposable mixing bowls and spoons,
Water,
Plaster of Paris,
Small Wax-lined Paper Cups,
Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint – 20216E Fuchsia,
Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint -20221E Kiwi,
Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint -20247E Caribbean
Popsicle Sticks,
Cello bags,
Pipe-cleaners
1. Combine 1 3/4 cups of water with 2 cups of Plaster of Paris. Stir gently so you don’t create air bubbles. Mix until it looks and feels like pancake batter.
2. Add the Apple Barrel Paint and continue to stir. When adding the paint, begin with a tablespoon. Add more paint until the desired color is reached. Our color order is: Fuchsia, Kiwi and Caribbean.
3. Divide the mixture equally across the wax-lined paper cups. Only fill the cups 1/3 full. You should have enough of the mixture to fill about 10 cups. Wait a couple of minutes and then add a popsicle stick to the center. Leave undisturbed for 4 hours.
4. After 4 hours, mix your second batch of color the same way. Fill the cups 2/3 full. Allow to dry for 4 hours.
5. After 4 hours, Mix your third batch of color the same way. Fill the cups to the top. Allow to dry overnight,
6. Peel the cup away from the chalk popsicle and rub any paper residue from the chalk with your finger.
7. Wrap it up! Homemade sidewalk chalk makes a great gift. Add chalk popsicle to a cello bag, tie a bow or twist a pipe-cleaner and you have a very special gift for a budding artist.
