Oh man…. I was lucky enough to work with the great Gene Hackman back in my movie costume days. He was so funny and kind on the set of “Heartbreakers”. I’m sad to hear about his passing. His character was funny and big….. but in real life he was even funnier and fast. Making sure everyone was having a great time. Poor guy had the best “worst” makeup for the movie….. so I will always see him with his tobacco titan teeth. He would smile really big to show off the makeup. So many great films and characters! I think it’s a “The Birdcage” kind of night. 💜 #genehackman

Over the years, I have given many pep-talks on bei

Over the years, I have given many pep-talks on being a creative entrepreneur. The tale of getting hired at @joann_stores almost always starts the chat. When I saw the news about JOANN struggling my heart sank because #everybodylovesjoann because they are amazing! I learned early to value my stitching, glitter & glue knowledge and for that I will always be grateful for my time at JOANN.

I worked at JOANN during high school and college. I started when I was 16 and I still have my name tag 38 years later! The store window said "Help Wanted" so I applied. I was turned away, the manager thought I wouldn't know about selling machines, reading patterns and fabrics.

I went home and brewed on the interview. The next day, I returned to the store and asked the manager to test me. She tested me and hired me on the spot.... she laughed and said that I knew more about reading patterns and machines than she did.

In high school, I made as many party dresses as I could. I remember one dance where I had made 6 different dresses on the dance floor. I even made a wedding gown when I was 17! Every single thread, button and cut of fabric was from JOANN. Swipe to see some party dresses - that is me in the center.

The journey from working at JOANN to having my Mod Podge product designs sold at JOANN is something the 16-year old me wouldn't believe. I still have flashbacks of me in the store on Friday nights teaching how to make stiffened 80’s bows with Folkart & Mod Podge products. I’m still teaching Mod Podge ideas with a bit bigger audience. Celebrating 40+ Million views on my Mod Podge videos just in the past two years.

I still remember some of my customers, managers and workmates from my time at JOANN. I can't help but think about how getting hired at JOANN shaped my entire career..... from selling TV shows and being nominated for two Emmys to pitching product development ideas and seeing my products on the store shelf. That early lesson of going back and trying again is something I will always carry with me. I’m grateful for my time at JOANN and hope that this business can find solutions to help JOANN stay open. We need fabric stores and creative outlets!
