Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all the little budding artists who use the sidewalk as their canvas! These rainbow sidewalk chalks were made with recycled Kraft Macaroni and Cheese boxes, Plaster of Paris and Apple Barrel Paints.
Video How To
As you can see in the video and in this picture we used many different materials for molds.
Materials Needed:
Rainbow of Apple Barrel Paints.
2 Disposable mixing bowls and spoons
Water
Plaster of Paris
Mac & Cheese Boxes (2 chalks per box)
Cello bags, Tag & Pipe-cleaners
Prep your molds. Cut the ends off of the mac and cheese boxes to create little rectangle molds. Use tape to seal up any opened ends. The molds should be about 2″ tall.
Combine 1 3/4 cups of water with 2 cups of Plaster of Paris. Stir gently so you don’t create air bubbles. Mix until it looks and feels like pancake batter.
Add the Apple Barrel Paint and continue to stir. When adding the paint, begin with a tablespoon. Add more paint until the desired color is reached.
Divide the mixture equally across the molds. Only fill the molds 1/3 full. Leave undisturbed for 4 hours.
Peel the paper away from the chalk brick and rub any paper residue from the chalk with your finger.
Do this for each color of chalk you wish to make.
Wrap it up! Homemade sidewalk chalk makes a great gift. Add chalk popsicle to a cello bag, tie a bow or twist a pipe-cleaner and you have a very special gift for a budding artist.
These chalk animals were made from egg cartons. See the tutorial here.
The chalk flowers were molded from a candy mold.
They can be used to create fun teacher gifts! To wrap the chalks I used cello pretzel sized bags.
We used small paper cups and popsicle sticks to create the chalk-pops.
